Volvo CE Taps Into 5G Wireless
Volvo Construction Equipment, a leading global manufacturer of various types of machines for the construction industry, recently formed a partnership with the mobile operator Telia Company to begin testing 5G mobile wireless technology on select Volvo CE machines at a test site in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
Next-Gen Wireless
Volvo CE currently uses mobile data networks for its autonomous machines and enabling communications for the company’s various intelligent site solutions. The mobile networking technology of the future represented by 5G will bring faster speeds, improved reliability, and better coverage, all of which can help increase productivity and enhance safety for Volvo CE’s customers.
The 5G Partnership Program, which also counts as a contributing member the mobile telecom firm Ericsson, was launched this June at the 5G World Congress in London. The program will span two years, which will give Volvo CE a significant advantage among its competitors as 5G is still several years away from widespread availability.
According to Patrik Lundblad, Volvo CE’s senior vice president of technology, “Within the construction industry, [5G] opens up great potential for processing mobile data and will inevitably impact the ways in which our machines communicate and interact remotely. To be at the forefront of this digital revolution and collaborate on developing new technologies is a game changer for Volvo CE.”
