Komatsu has announced several updates to its S92 harvesting head for the 2024 model year. The upgrade includes a new, standard Constant Cut saw motor controller as well as reliability and productivity enhancements requested by customers. The S92 head is compatible with Komatsu 901, 901XC, and 911 wheeled harvesters, as well as with forestry machines from other brands.

“Continuous improvement is part of our DNA,” says Mikael Forsberg, product manager for harvester heads at Komatsu Forest. “One of our most popular heads, the Komatsu S92, will be even more reliable and productive in the forest.”

    More Durable & Serviceable

The S92’s new Constant Cut intelligent saw unit regulates the speed of the chain, keeping it at a high level without overspeeding. The updated head’s length-measuring wheel now tracks the stem more closely for greater accuracy. The head uses a 4-point measuring system to calculate the diameter of the stem with precision.

Komatsu redesigned the S92’s Find End photocell sensor, which works to prolong the head’s service life in conjunction with new mechanical stops for its rear knife. Performance is improved by a new, more energy-efficient feed system.

Rerouted hoses make the S92 head’s feed system easier to service. Komatsu also made all lubrication points accessible with the head in an upright position. A redesign of the head’s color marking tanks makes them easier to refill. The manufacturer also re-engineered the S92’s multi-tree handling function for durability, allowing the harvester head to be lower and nimbler during use. Komatsu added a new head computer to support new features in the future.

“The response from customers who have tried the upgraded head has been positive only with comments such as that the feed speed is really good; the geometry of the saw box and the position of the saw bar makes the cutting much faster and increases production significantly; the new knife control on the lower knife is very good and the clamping of the stem is perfect; and that the entire head is much improved compared to previous versions,” says Forsberg.

    The Komatsu S92

The S92 harvester head has a maximum cutting diameter of 24.8 inches (630 millimeters) and a max delimbing diameter of 14.8 in. (376 mm). The 2,114-pound (959-kilogram) head uses dual motors, dual steel feed rollers, and durable cast iron delimbing knives. Its 29.5-in. (750-mm) saw bar benefits from automated cut control, chain oiling, and chain tensioning. The head’s MaxiXT intelligent control system has a graphical interface and allows operators to easily enter their preferred control settings.
