    About Excavator Mulchers

Along with skid-steer, track, and wheel mulchers, excavator mulchers are a type of mulcher used in forestry, land clearing, land reclamation, commercial and residential construction, oil and gas pipeline projects, wildlife restoration, conservation, and other applications across numerous industries.

Unlike other mulchers that generally feature a front-mounted mulcher head incorporating a wide horizontal shaft, excavator mulchers typically use a mulcher attachment, or head, mounted to the excavator’s boom and that features a narrower vertical shaft. Similar to a rotary chipping drum, the shaft integrates either fixed teeth or swinging hammers.

    Fewer Resource Requirements

Despite their varying strengths and weaknesses, excavator and other mulcher types all help remove underbrush, trees, and other vegetation from land areas. A primary benefit mulchers offer is an ability to greatly reduce manpower and time otherwise required to clear vegetation, something that historically has involved several people operating a combination of fellers, bunchers, skidders, forwarders, and other equipment to fell, bunch, clean up, and remove the material from the job site. Conversely, mulchers return the trees, stumps, and vegetation they shred back to the ecosystem for decomposition.

    Beyond Mulching

Unlike front-mounted mulchers, excavator models’ use of a vertically oriented mulcher head means it can reach some vegetation more easily, and can mulch standing trees. Vertical mulchers, however, are typically more limited in the size of tree they can mulch. Excavator mulchers are considered well suited for working on steeper slopes, and with their swinging boom, they’re often a better option than heavier purpose-built mulchers where disrupting soil is a concern. Furthermore, compared to purpose-built mulchers, excavator models provide the ability to exchange the mulcher head for other attachments, enabling their use for other purposes.

Leading manufacturers and brands of excavator mulchers for sale on ForestryTrader.com include Caterpillar, Deere, Hyundai, Kobelco, and others.
