Wheel Mulchers
Faster and more agile than track mulchers, wheel mulchers are handy when speed is key and terrain disruption is not a concern.
Read More (About Wheel Mulchers)Used for forestry, oil and gas pipeline projects, commercial and residential construction, right-of-way maintenance, land clearing, land reclamation, wildlife restoration, and other applications across a range of industries, wheel mulchers are one of several types of forestry-related mulchers. Other types include skid-steer, excavator, and track mulchers.
As is the case with some track mulchers, wheel mulchers are often large, powerful, and durable purpose-built machines based on a loader that features a front-mounted mulcher head. Purpose-built mulchers provide an alternative to using a combination of other equipment (feller/bunchers, forwarders, and so on) to fell and bunch trees and then haul them away—a process that can require significantly more manpower and time than simply using a mulcher that shreds vegetation and returns it to the ecosystem for decomposition.
Mulchers are often referred to as “brushcutters” and “masticators.” They help operators remove underbrush, trees, and other vegetation from various types of property. As with a mulcher built on an excavator chassis, some wheel loader-type mulchers enable attaching a mulching attachment, or “head,” to a boom. This enables operators to reach trees and vegetation from greater distances, as well as provide the ability to cut and mulch standing trees smaller in diameter.
Some wheel mulchers also push through vegetation with a front-located bar, cutting the vegetation at the stems and then mulching it as the mulcher passes over it.
Both wheel and track mulcher types are considered well-suited for handling large land-clearing jobs, although track mulchers are generally considered a better choice when soil disruption is an issue, as they provide better traction and create less ground pressure. Wheel mulchers, however, are more agile and can travel faster on and off the job site.
