The Michigan-based manufacturer’s forestry and tree care products include track and towable horizontal grinders, stump grinders, track mulchers, and whole-tree chippers. It also makes hand-fed chippers, skid steer attachments, slow-speed shredders, and track carriers. Bandit’s December 2021 acquisition of Trelan Manufacturing added Trelan whole-tree wood chippers to its lineup.

    The Bandit Timeline

Bandit was launched in 1983 as Foremost Fabrications by co-founders Mike Morey Sr. and Dianne Morey. That year, Morey Sr. built the first Brush Bandit chipper with help from six employees in a small warehouse in Michigan. In 1987, the company name was changed to Bandit Industries. During the early 1990s, Bandit introduced the first track chipper. A few years later, it introduced The Beast, a horizontal grinder that’s still popular for processing waste wood, plastic, roofing shingles, and other materials. In the early 2000s, Bandit released stump grinders and track carriers with interchangeable forestry mower and stump grinding heads. In 2013, it introduced a line of skid-steer attachments for land-clearing jobs.

    Company Expansion

Bandit says strong product demand led to a major expansion project designed to expand the company’s manufacturing facilities to 560,000 square feet (52,025 square meters). Bandit has also grown its global dealer network in recent years to more than 235 locations, and increased its employee base by more than 150 workers. In 2018, Bandit shifted to an employee-owned business when the owners announced they would sell 100% of the company to employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

    Bandit Chippers & Grinders

Bandit made its name with hand-fed chippers with features like the Slide Box Feed System and Power slot. Among Bandit’s best-known products is The Beast, available in track and towable models from 300 to 1,200 horsepower (224 to 895 kilowatts). The Beast 3680XP has a 42-inch-diameter by 63-in.-wide (107- by 160-centimeter) patented cutter mill available with 30 or 60 teeth. The high-production Beast 4680XP offers wireless remote control with tether backup for all grinding functions.

The midsize 200XP wood chipper is available in towable, track, and PTO versions with gas or diesel fuel options; it has a 12-in. (30.5-cm) disc and hydraulic-powered dual-feed wheel system with roughly 3,376 pounds of pulling power. The Intimidator 21XP can pull in and handle whole large trees, but is still compact enough to easily haul and maneuver around jobsites. The 21XP is available for disc or drum operation, and Bandit reports that it can fill a chipping van in only about 50 minutes.
