    About Sawmills

“Sawmill” is a term that refers to any machine, facility, or company that cuts, mills, or processes raw wood into finished planks of lumber. When referring to a modern machine designed to handle this task, the term “portable” is usually appended. A portable sawmill can be any device that converts logs into finished planks. These tend to employ large circular blades or band-style blades, depending on the design of the sawmill. Sawmills are also sometimes referred to as slasher saws.

    Types Of Sawmills

Generally, there are two primary types of sawmills. The traditional design involves moving the log, commonly with a conveyor belt or trolley, toward a stationary circular saw blade that forms the planks. More modern sawmills tend to favor a design that keeps the log stationary, and moves the bandsaw-style saw blade and motor component (called the “head”) along the length of the log to form planks. Slasher saws tend to refer to sawmills with a chain-and-bar cutting mechanism, which looks like (and effectively is) a large chainsaw that lets the operator cut the logs to length. Most portable sawmills are small enough to feature an axle and wheel for towing by a truck or other vehicle, though some are only portable in sections.
