A cylindrical hammermill at the base of the tub is the primary grinding mechanism. One of the most common styles of hammermill is a “pin and plate” with a primary drive shaft, mill plates, rods, and hammers. Rolled steel screen plates sit below the hammermill. Holes in the screens, often somewhere between a half-inch to 6 inches (1.2 to 15.2 centimeters) across, allow material that has reached the desired size to pass through. From there, a conveyor belt or auger transports the product away. Some tub grinders also come with a cover to prevent material from flying out during operation.
