    About Wheel Stump Grinders

Stump grinders on wheels tend to be more maneuverable than those on tracks (and some are safe for transport on public roads), but aren’t quite as stable on inclines and in rough or shifting terrain.

    About Wheel Stump Grinders

A wheel stump grinder, sometimes referred to as a “stump cutter,” is a machine used in the forestry industry to remove tree stumps from the ground following the removal of the trunk. This particular type is mounted to a chassis either with one axle and a hitch for towing or with more than one axle for self-propelled models.

Most stump grinders employ a rotating disk with sharp metal teeth, often made of tungsten carbide, to grind or saw the stump into small particles or chips. The disk of this type of machine rotates side to side to shave down the stump a few inches at a time, then lowers to make subsequent passes until the stump no longer protrudes from the ground. Vertical stump grinders employ a rotating auger that effectively drills deep into the stump, a method that is superior for stopping continued root growth.

    Types Of Wheel Stump Grinders

Although wheel stump grinders are categorized separately from track-propelled stump grinders, they differ only in their mode of motility. Stump grinders come in a range of sizes, as large as a full-sized excavator and as small as a handheld power tool. The larger units are typically self-propelled and the smaller two-wheeled units are often designed for towing behind another vehicle.

Wheeled stump grinders tend to have a slightly harder time reaching remote, heavily forested locales compared to track stump grinders, but they have the advantage of being safe for moving over public roads without the use of a trailer. Some units feature side-mounted or remote controls. Stump-grinding attachments are also available for a variety of forestry, construction, and agriculture equipment.
