    About Feller Bunchers

A feller buncher is a self-propelled machine that cuts down trees using a cutting head capable of holding and cutting tree stems and placing them in piles for pickup and transport. They have been around since the late 1960s, when Erv Drott is believed to have created the first feller buncher. Feller bunchers are commonly used alongside forwarders, grapplers, and skidders. Many improvements have been made to the general design of these machines over the years, including updated styles and options for cutting heads. Feller bunchers come in both track- and wheel-propelled models, and are also differentiated by the type of cutting head they use, with options including shears, disc saws, and chain saws.

    Track Feller Bunchers

Track models, also called “swing boom” or “stationary” feller bunchers, are used primarily in unstable, wet, loose, and sloped terrain and operate from a largely stationary position using a swing boom to move trees. Track feller bunchers are often used in clear-cutting, selective-harvesting, and thinning applications.

    Wheel Feller Bunchers

Wheel feller bunchers, sometimes called “drive-to-tree” feller bunchers, have the advantage of faster speeds and greater maneuverability over tracked models, but offer less stability on slopes. These models use rubber tires to move to a tree to secure and fell it using a chain saw, disc saw, or shear cutting head that is directly mounted to machine.
