    About Processor/Harvesters

Processor/harvesters are the true workhorses of any forestry operation, whether it’s focused on clear-cutting or thinning chores. In just seconds, one of these amazing machines can cut down a tree, delimb it, and buck it to desired lengths for transport. Integral to this process is the harvester head at the end of the machine’s hydraulic boom, which may extend up to 30 feet (9 meters) or more to grasp the tree, cut it, and process it. Although harvester heads differ, the primary components include delimbing knives, saws, and feed rollers.

These self-propelled forestry machines also feature a rear- or front-mounted cab, and are available in wheel or track models, each providing its own distinct advantages. Depending on the model, a new or used processor/harvester may include automatic boom control that assists with repetitive motions and lets the operator concentrate on moving the head where it needs to go.

    Wheels Or Tracks?

The decision to purchase a wheel or track processor/harvester generally comes down to the terrain the machine will be working on the majority of the time, which in turn determines the amount of maneuverability and stability it must possess to get the job done safely and efficiently. Due to their smaller footprint and superior traction, harvesters based on track excavators are able to traverse muddy, snowy, and sloped forests to reach areas where a wheel model may not be able to go. The U.S. Forest Service says a track-equipped harvester can generally perform processing and harvesting duties on slopes up to 55%, while wheel models are usually limited to grades of 40% or less.

Wheel processor/harvesters are generally built on articulated chassis that give them greater maneuverability and stability. A wheel harvester’s four, six, or eight large tires also spread the machine’s weight out across a wider area, thus minimizing its impact on the forest floor.

    Features & Options

Processor/harvesters can include a wide range of features and options including everything from a rear-view camera system to a suspended cabin that makes driving and logging more comfortable. Many models include programmable computer control systems that automate processing chores. For example, Tigercat models include a D5 touchscreen control system that gives operators easy access to key performance data and lets them quickly make needed adjustments to a variety of settings. The Deere 853MH tracked harvester, among the more popular models on ForestryTrader.com, includes a host of features including Deere’s Smooth Boom Control system that helps reduce machine wear and tear.

In addition to self-leveling cab functionality, some processor/harvesters have a rotating cab that enhances operator visibility across the entire work area. The 853MH’s cab has a floor-to-ceiling front window, a skylight, large side windows, and an optional floor window to improve sightlines. Other examples of cab-related features include the forward-sliding cab design of the popular Barko 260-H that makes machine servicing easier. The cab also offers a heated air-ride seat, exterior LED lighting, and an air knife system that keeps the front window and skylight free of debris.
